Rick:

I agree. I like many on this thread work in the computer industry and the keystone of the industry is creating redundant systems. I develop internet projects now, but for a couple of years I designed Windows NT systems for the State and we spent more time worrying about what safeguards we had in place in the event of a crash then anything else. We covered ALL the bases, what to do in the event of a power outage (backup generator + batteries for each server), what to do if a server crashed (promote one of the five backup machines), when to do system upgrades (ONLY on Weekends) etc. Keep in mind this was the State of Florida Dept. of Transportation, NOT a broker that claims to have a system that works as advertised.

Does this mean a system can be perfect?? No, but it is certainly possible to get very close. The airline industry is a great example - we have maybe two or three serious crashes a year with millions of flights, by far the safest way to travel. This is all because of the FAA and all of the safeguards put in place.

In the end, by the way, everyone would benefit form Etrade addressing these issues.
