Rod--I think I was there in 1988 and 89.
I would have to check my old passport to be sure. I fished with Moana, Tabaki, Simon, Rick, and Big Eddie. Tabaki was a new guide at the time we were fishing, I understand he is in charge now. Big Eddie was fired. I spent a week each time.
I really learned bonefishing there. I had an eye doctor tell me once that I had 'super vision' after he tested me. But I felt blind out there the first few days. Then I started seeing the bonefish and it was like a switch being thrown. My second trip I fished without a guide with me and did great. When I later fished Belize the people in our group viewed me as one of the gunslingers because I could see bonefish without assistance. Pretty ironic for someone who had only two weeks experience.
Moana was named 'Guide of the Year' by one of the flyfishing magazines a few years ago. I forget which magazine and the exact date. I presume he is still active.
My bonefish average was similar to yours, I think around 25 fish a day. I did little trevally fishing until the last day of my last trip. We started 'calling' them. We would get near the edge of one of the flats with a drop off and start ripping our flies through the water and splashing water over the deeper water. It never took long for a school of trevally to come to see what the commotion was about.
I hooked a few sharks on bonefish flies and usually was bitten right off. Never caught one.
I would have gone back there for the trevally but I started tarpon fishing and lost my heart. I have been after those bruisers the last eight years and will be after them again at the end of May.
All the Best
