Hitachi To Boost Chip Spending By 10 Bln Yen In FY98

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Hitachi Ltd. (6501) plans to spend an additional 10 billion yen or so on semiconductor plant investment this fiscal year, raising the total to about 50 billion yen on a consolidated basis, it was learned Sunday. The decision is attributed to improvements in the memory chip market from last autumn.

Greater investment into domestic precision fabrication facilities is now seen as a way to boost profitability for the electronics giant.

Hitachi expects to post consolidated net loss of 375 billion yen in fiscal 1998 and had earlier halved the original projection for capital investment related to its money-losing chip business to 40 billion yen.

The bulk of new investment is to go to a system chip plant in Hitachinaka, Ibaraki Prefecture that is the company's most advanced production facility, Hitachi officials said. The company plans to strengthen its capability to produce 64-megabit DRAMs as well as the more sophisticated system chips.

Although the semiconductor division is expected to post consolidated operating loss of 110 billion yen in the current fiscal year, the business environment is seen brightening due to the stabilization in DRAM prices since last autumn, the officials said.
