Michelle -- DELL would make little money if all they did was sell the finished goods of others. Their distribution management would be worth next to nothing if they did not build to order. By shrink wrapping their product offerings around their customers they can have very high margins for this kind of business and add high levels of value for their customers. It is common for retailers to carry some goods to round out their product offerings with products on which they do not make much money, and in some cases where they even lose a little. If DELL did not build to order, we would not even notice their existence, and it would be of little consequence to anyone -- they would be a low margin distributor -- like AMZN.
