HAL = Hardware abstraction layer

Essentially, it's the part of the software that translates between the application and the hardware that it's trying to talk to.

NT uses a Hardware Abstraction Layer to interface between the hardware and the micro-kernel. Your neighbor kid must have been using NT. Not all games run in NT.
