As I was informed by people on this thread when CPQ started paying a dividend, there were a number of mutual funds that could not buy CPQ because they only invest in dividend playing stocks. Without knowing for sure, I should think a number of funds that now hold positions in CPQ [because it pays a dividend] are rather conservative and would potentially have to sell some of their CPQ holdings purely because the AV situation no longer made CPQ meet the criteria for stocks held in their fund. Heavy institutional selling, for no matter what reason, would not be interpreted well. All people would see was the decrease in institutions holding shares or the decrease in shares held by institutions.

Then there are the little guys. Now that shares can be bought directly for as little as an initial $250 investment, there are people setting up accounts for their children and grandchildren. These people for the most part are looking for steady growth and capital appreciation via dividend reinvestment with occasional, optional infusions of cash [at birthdays, Christmas, Hannakah, etc.]. Exposure to internet high fliers is about the last thing these people want.
