The Democrats have expanded the SS programs when they knew well that it was not fiscally sound. The same with Clinton's proposal for a lower age limit for Medicare. Medicare by the way is the third largest entitlement program. There is a broad category of entitlements called Income Security/Welfare which consumes 15% of the budget. There are also Health programs, such as Medicaid. In total, they account for 68% of the budget. Adding in the various tax credits, deductions, etc., entitlements are probably nearer 80% than 70%. Clinton just proposed several more entitlements in addition to sucking the SS money into Medicare.

The SS surpluses are running at 100-150 billion now. Yet, the government's debt last year increased by 113 billion. Given that we now have a 0% national savings rate as opposed to 5% in the 70's and 80's, it would appear the financial health (public and private) is in a worse state than it was even in the last recession.

The fact is the Democrats started this mess, and made it progressively worse.
