This technique has not previously been attempted. They were only able to cut the drill pipe at depth on Saturday.

Later,

At 08:30hrs Calgary time, the mechanical kill is currently being performed.
Word from the wellsite is that we will know if it was successful in a few hours. Stay tuned.

Kerm, this is the first time the ball-bearing technique has been performed. In order to do this, the stuck drill string had to be cut, allowing the introduction of ball bearings into the annulus. These bearings are too large to force through the jet ports in the drill bit. The idea is that they are just small enough to fit in the annular space, between the drill-pipe and the casing, but will become lodged when they are forced up against the larger diameter drill-collars.
Prior to today, only conventional cement plugs have been attempted, unsuccessfully, due to the huge pressures and fluid flow.
