Mattel, Inc. Showcases the Hottest Toys at the 1999
American International Toy Fair in New York City!

NEW YORK, Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Continuing its long-standing tradition of bringing the most innovative and compelling
toys to the marketplace, today Mattel, Inc. (NYSE: MAT - news), will introduce new products that incorporate hot trends and
the latest technology at the 1999 American International Toy Fair.

A few highlights of the products to be demonstrated at the Mattel showroom include:

-- The BARBIE® doll, the most popular toy ever created, is celebrating her 40th Anniversary. To commemorate the milestone
year, Mattel will issue a special 40th Anniversary-themed collectible Barbie doll inspired by the look of the original 1959 doll.

-- This year the Barbie doll will add KRISSY® DOLL, a brand new baby
sister and ROSIE O'DONNELL DOLL, a new celebrity friend sculpted to
look just like the popular talk show host, to her growing world of
family and friends! For each Rosie doll sold a shared donation by
Mattel and the retailer will be made to the "For All Kids Foundation."
From Barbie Collectibles the "Barbie Loves" series features BARBIE
LOVES FRANKIE SINATRA, set in the 1940s. The Frankie doll has original
Frank Sinatra sculpting and looks fabulous in his signature style from
the '40s era. There is also a limited edition MILLENNIUM BRIDE BARBIE
that is wearing a stunning, heavily beaded silver gray wedding gown,
inspired by the new millennium.

-- There's also GENERATION GIRL, a totally hip, ultra-cool teen line of
dolls that includes Barbie doll and new friends from around the world
-- each with a distinct personality, aspiration and interest. The
Generation Girl line of products will include an array of lifestyle
products ranging from fashion dolls to books to CD-ROMs and licensed
products. There will also be hand-held electronics such as
E-Secret(TM), an electronic compact that allows girls to exchange
secret messages that they unlock with a special key necklace.

-- Mattel Collectibles' line of celebrity dolls features four timeless
stars: ELIZABETH TAYLOR, LUCILLE BALL, ELVIS PRESLEY and AUDREY HEPBURN
in their most memorable moments.

-- HOT WHEELS®, the "Official Car of the New Millennium," exceed the
speed limit with a new line of Formula One die-cast vehicles in an
assortment of scales for both children and collectors. Hot Wheels have
also entered into an exclusive agreement with Ferrari to manufacture
replicas that capture the intricate designs of the prestigious Ferrari
vehicles including the most popular vintage vehicles, and new
contemporary car.

-- Tyco R/C introduces the most novel product in radio control in a long
time! CANNED HEAT(TM) is a full-function R/C in a can. When its
canister lid is twisted off Canned Heat transforms into a radio
transmitter to control a variety of cool micro-sized vehicles such as a
replica of the VW New Beetle.

-- Mattel and Intel launch the Intel® Play(TM) line of PC-enhanced toys.
The Intel Play X3(TM) Microscope lets children magnify and display
microscopic objects on their PC screens and then play with the images
in creative ways. The microscope uses digital video imaging technology
to let kids view, enlarge and save images. The software included with
the microscope allows children to capture video and stills as well as
create time-lapse movies. The Intel Play Me2Cam(TM) creates a whole
new system of play where children see themselves on the computer screen
and use their own bodies to navigate in a virtual world.

-- Disney's newest animated feature film, "Tarzan" and the much
anticipated Disney/Pixar's "Toy Story 2" have inspired a complete line
of fashion dolls, action figures, plush toys, die-cast vehicles,
playsets, games and puzzles so that kids can re-create their favorite
movie scenes over and over again. SMART FLYIN' BUZZ LIGHTYEAR brings
the character to life with advanced motion sensors that let Buzz
determine his position and direction of "flight" and appropriately
comment.

-- Skateboarding isn't just for boys anymore! There are more than two
million female skateboarders in the U.S. and tapping into that trend is
SKATEBOARD SHANNEN, the first full-performance radio controlled product
for girls. Girls can control the skateboarding doll to perform jumps,
360s and wheelies -- just like a real skateboarder.

-- The Fisher-Price® HARLEY-DAVIDSON® MOTORCYCLE is the coolest Power
Wheels yet! This classic Harley really looks like a two-wheel
motorcycle but has cleverly hidden outrigger wheels for extra
stability.

-- Mattel Media is transforming the children's CD-ROM category with new
multimedia titles. BARBIE Gotta Groove CD-ROM . This breakthrough
technology utilizes motion and real-time 3-D animation, empowering
girls to choreograph dance routines on the computer. HOT WHEELS Crash
CD-ROM lets boys smash and crash their way all over a Hollywood movie
studio lot while earning points to unlock bonus rounds, secret levels
and custom options to upgrade their cars' performance. SESAME
STREET® Create & Draw In Elmo's World CD-ROM is an amazing way for
preschoolers to explore their creativity by allowing them to design
incredible drawings that swim, run and fly on the computer!

-- CHAT PALS(TM) are the next generation of plush toys, utilizing
cutting-edge technology to really come to life. Squeezing the plush
toy's paw activates these interactive pals. Chat Pals "hear" the
child's responses, turn their heads to look right at them, and respond
when the child is finished speaking. When the characters are together,
the pals "sense" each other and will also include each other in the
chat interaction.

-- When kids "read" to GOODNIGHT BLUE from her favorite storybook, she
closes her eyes, lowers her ears and gradually fades off to sleep and
starts to snore.

-- With the push of a button kids can help ROCK 'N ROLL ELMO and ROCK 'N
ROLL ERNIE rock out. These plush toys sing two classic songs, "play"
the guitar and groove to the beat!
