I used to work in the printing trade, mostly something called "stripping," which did not require any removal of clothing, but simply meant preparing negatives to make plates for photolithographic presses. The various images were shot on strips of film, hence the job title. I cut and placed film images on printing-plate-sized sheets of yellow paper all day long, and so I used scissors, single edged razor blades and x-acto knifes constantly. I used to cut myself every so often. The worst I ever cut myself was when I was trimming a pre-press proof of a magazine to size using a very large ruler and a single-edge razor blade. I had to bear down hard to cut through 16 pages of proof paper, and I did not notice that the end of my left thumb was sticking out past the edge of the ruler, and I cut it off - - just the tip! Blood everywhere, and they made me go to the doctor, I kept insisting that I wanted them to find the tip of my thumb, but we couldn't find it. When I came back after having my thumb stitched up, one of my co-workers, a wag, had made me a sign which he hung over my light table, saying:

"When cutting - move thumb out of way of razor blade."

I never made that mistake again.
