Nokia launches world's first tri-mode/dual band CDMA digital phone; The new Nokia 6185 reinforces Nokia's lead in digital wireless technology

NEW ORLEANS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 8, 1999--Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, will today launch the world's first tri-mode/dual band CDMA phone at CTIA Wireless '99.

The Nokia 6185 is a true 3-volt phone based on Nokia's own chip-set design and includes new features such as an internal modem for data and fax connections, an in-built vibrating alert, and up to 4.5 hours of talk time and more than 8 days of standby time. The new Nokia 6185 will begin shipping during first quarter 1999.

The new phones complement an extensive range of Nokia CDMA handsets that are being introduced this year, including the Nokia 5170 (CDMA1900), Nokia 5180 (CDMA 800/AMPS) and Nokia 8800 series.

"The Nokia 6185, along with our new 5100 and 8800 series CDMA wireless phones, reflect Nokia's dominance in digital technology development," said Larry Paulson, vice president, Product Line Management, CDMA at Nokia Mobile Phones. "Tri-mode offers increased revenue opportunities for carriers through an expanded roaming base, and provides subscribers with digital CDMA services while roaming, extended digital talk and standby time and exceptional call clarity."

Designed with today's changing lifestyle in mind, the Nokia 6185 combines the benefits of multiple products and offers enhanced features that reach far beyond that of traditional wireless products. The Nokia 6185 incorporates a broad set of features, including the Nokia-developed personalization feature called "Profiles," which enable fast selection of phone settings, such as "Silent," "Meeting" or "Outdoor," used in different environments and lifestyles. The 5.2 ounce phone also features a high-resolution, illuminated graphical display, Caller ID sensitive ringing tones that can be assigned to 10 important callers, an alarm clock, calendar and four electronic games.

Circuit-Switched Data)

The Nokia 6185 employs advanced CDMA capabilities, including full support of CDMA IS-95 features, two Number Assignment Modules (NAMs), Over-the-Air Activation (OTA) and enhanced audio and speech quality achieved with a EVRC (Enhanced Variable Rate Codec), 8 kbit/s and 13 kbit/s vocoders. The phone also supports conference calling of up to three parties.

The Nokia 6185, Nokia 5170 and Nokia 5180 are the only CDMA phones that provide wireless digital voice clarity for the hearing impaired. The phones, combined with a Nokia LPS-1 Loopset, provide those persons with a Telecoil (T-coil) hearing aid, a convenient and comfortable way to carry and use a CDMA phone to its full potential.

Small and lightweight, the Nokia 6100 series offers impressive performance, unmatched by any other wireless product in the industry. The award-winning phones support PCS digital technology and extend beyond the set calling area by functioning on both a digital network and the nationwide network of analog cellular systems.
