Baikonur trivia . . .

1) The Baikonur Cosmodrome is located at 45.63N latitude, 63.26E longitude, north of the city of Leninsk, Kazakhstan, which is on the Syr Dar'ya River. The launch complexes are about a 1 1/2 hr. drive from Leninsk.

2) The Cosmodrome is leased by Russia from Kazakhstan at a rate of 115 million dollars per year. As of April 1998, Russia was 4 years in arrears on the rent.

3) The Cosmodrome is jointly administered by the Russian Space Agency, and the Russian Strategic Rocket Forces.

4) The Cosmodrome is appox. 20 by 40 miles in size, and employs about 20,000 people.

5) The land is a high desert plateau, very brown and drab in appearance. The soil is so caustic that wooden telephone poles must be set in concrete footings, or the soil will eat right through them.

6) Several herds of wild camels (the two hump variety) roam about the Cosmodrome, and will spit at people if approached.

Good luck to us all on the G* launch, and beware of the wild camels !
