Get your free PC at www.free-pc.com

I just checked out the site. Judging from the difficulty in downloading the page, there appears to be heavy interest already.

This will mean huge volume for Compaq, though probably with minimal if any profit. Perhaps Compaq has negotiated a percentage of the advertising revenue.

The main problem I see is that the monitor is only 15 inch and a large part of it is permanently allocated to the advertising which surrounds the usable area.

The deal also includes free internet access and email.

This should attract a new class of PC users who could not justify even $500 for something they did not see any use for. Surveys estimate this to be about 20% of the US population. Once they get hooked on all the great stuff on the internet, many will go out and buy a second PC with a bigger display. Compaq is obviously hoping they will buy another Compaq. Since the operation is run by a third party, maybe Dell can buy some advertising space on the screen. MD said in an interview posted here recently that most consumer purchasers of Dell PCs already have a PC and are upgrading.

I'm going to order one as soon as I can get into the site :-)
It will be our fourth PC at home. One HP from before I became a DellHead, two Dells, (one of which is a home loan from HP!) and a FreePC from Compaq. I will also order one for my mother so we can exchange email. Her budget does not allow $20 per month for internet access, let alone a computer, so this is ideal for her. She is probably in one of the main demographic audiences for this deal. She has plenty of cash stashed away for retirement and can touch type, but feels no need to get on the internet as she is set in her ways and has plenty of friends nearby to interact with. She detests materialism but would put up with advertising to be able to communicate with her prodigal son who rarely writes because he has forgotten how to lick a stamp :)
