NEW YORK (Feb. 5) BUSINESS WIRE-Feb. 5, 1999--In an online exclusive posted today, FORTUNE reports that Bill Gates has given his two charitable foundations a combined gift of some $3.345 billion, believed to be the largest charitable gift ever made(EDIT: no kidding...). FORTUNE editor-at-large Andrew Serwer reports today in his online column "Street Life" and in the March 1 issue of the magazine that Gates has given some $2.23 billion to the William H. Gates Foundation, which makes grants in the area of world health and human services, as well as causes in the Seattle area. He also gave $1.115 billion to the Gates Learning Foundation (formerly known as the Gates Library Foundation), which provides libraries in low-income areas with software and computer services.

The gifts, made last week, bring the total endowment for the William H. Gates Foundation up to $4.2 billion and the Gates Learning Foundation to $1.3 billion. (end)

Now, quite frankly, someday I'd like to be able to donate 10% of my net worth to charity ($100 million would be fine). The man has my respect for that.
