Patristic literature consists of the writings of the Fathers of the Church, those theologians who in the early centuries were particularly important in developing doctrine and practice, such as St. Augustine.
I agree that the use of original sources for science is dubious, even St. John's diluted that tendency.
You are, of course, right about the Founding Father's, but they also thought that religion was an important underpinning of the civil order, since it tended to inculcate morality.
