ESS Technology, Inc. Announces a Cable TV Internet Set-Top System Joint Development Effort With Fei-Hong Electronics Co.

FREMONT, Calif., Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- ESS Technology Inc.
(Nasdaq: ESST) announced today it has entered into a joint development project
with Fei-Hong Electronics Company, Ltd. to develop a Cable TV Internet Set-Top
system. Fei-Hong is a cable TV set-top system developer under the guidance
and supervision of the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) of China.
Commenting on the joint development, Mr. Wu Zhao Li, President of Fei-Hong
said, "The advancement of Cable TV and Internet applications for Chinese
consumers is a top priority in the government agenda. We are pleased to
cooperate with a leading digital video solution provider such as ESS to
address the digital TV and Internet market in China."
The joint development currently underway leverages ESS digital video
architecture, which is built around a RISC processor and a DSP core. Without
additional infrastructure changes, the Internet Set-Top Box can be connected
to the existing cable TV network to deliver high quality audio/video
information services for Internet applications.
"This is part of ESS overall Internet roadmap to provide complete system
and applications solutions as well as Internet Service Provider (ISP) and
Internet Content Provider (ICP) services for the Chinese Internet market. We
are excited that this joint development will play an important role in the
convergence of digital video and the Internet," stated Mr. Fred Chan, ESS
Chairman, CEO and President.
With over 80 million existing Chinese cable TV subscribers, China is
currently one of the largest cable consumers in the world. The new cable TV
Internet Set-Top systems being developed will allow the consumer to access the
Internet without any PC experience or PC hardware.

solutions for the Internet, PC and consumer markets. ESS designs, develops,
and markets highly integrated mixed signal semiconductor, hardware, software
and system solutions for Internet, PC and multimedia applications. ESS,

in demand for PC and consumer multimedia products, as well as the other risks
detailed from time to time in the SEC reports of ESS, including the reports on
Form 10-K and Form 10Q. Actual results could differ materially from those
projected in the forward-looking statements.
