More: Com offers Taiwan high-speed Internet access

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb 8 (Reuters) - Internet equipment
supplier 3Com Corp. <COMS.O> and a Taiwanese Internet service
provider on Monday said they would offer high-speed Internet
access service to about 60 percent of cable households in Taiwan.

Hoshin Gigamedia Center Inc., a unit of Taiwan-based Koos
Group, has been evaluating the equipment and service in Taiwan
since September 1998 and selected 3Com to provide the ultra-fast
cable modems and cable system technology, including utilizing its
retail and other distribution channels.

Gigamedia, which will offer 3Com's cable modem to enable
connections up to 100 times faster than conventional dial-up
modems, will be available to about 3.4 million subscribers.

"We are very pleased to work with Gigamedia in introducing this
service to the Taiwanese market and supporting additional
broadband services and markets over the forthcoming years," said
Levent Gun, vice president and general manager of 3Com's Cable
Access group. "This is a significant relationship for 3Com in the
Asia-Pacific region, and we plan to leverage all our technological
and channel experience to make Koos Group deployments as
successful as possible."

The "plug-and-play" modems are as simple to install as a
standard analog modem, requiring only a screwdriver.
