re: Paying for spam free PC.

I would rather pay for a spam-free PC as well, and have already paid for two of them. I wouldn't mind getting a free one for the kids though. They can't read the spam anyway :) Also as I mentioned it would be great for my mother who will have not trouble ignoring the spam and would probably only use it for email anyway.

Here is the companies explanation for why people would want to sign up for constant spam.

From the free-pc FAQ

It is widely observed that consumers don't dislike ads, they just dislike ads about products they aren't interested in. Because of the profile of interests we build about a user from the application questionnaire and tracking which ads they click on, we will be able to deliver to them just the kinds of ads that they will find interesting and helpful. Additionally, because we are able to use at least 2 gigabytes of hard disk space to store ads, we will be able to serve up highly interactive and compelling ads, including full-motion video. Ultimately we feel as though our customers will come to view the ad bar as a value-added part of their Free-PC.

BTW, it looks like Compaq does not have a lock on the supply contract.
"Free-PC will buy Compaq Presario Internet PCs, the #1 selling Consumer PC, for the 10,000-unit trial."

Also the PC is only free for 2 years. I saw no mention of what happens when the 2 years are up. Perhaps you have a choice of paying for the PC or giving it back.

Ken

OT? what is to stop someone from doing a format on the HD and starting
with basically a true freebie? Granted you would have to provide Inet.
access on your own.. But?
