NEW YORK (Feb. 8) - Online broker Ameritrade suffered a half-hour outage before stock markets opened Monday, the latest in a series of computer glitches to raise questions about the reliability of Internet trading systems.

The company took down its system from 8:56 a.m. to 9:24 a.m. EST in order to fix the problem, preventing online customers from placing orders before the opening of stock trading at 9:30 a.m.

The outage also affected the accounts of Accutrade, a smaller online brokerage also run by the same company, said Paula Ebert, a spokeswoman for the Omaha, Neb.-based brokerage.

Last week, rival online brokerage ETrade suffered a series of shutdowns during trading hours, angering customers and adding fuel to an investigation of the booming online brokerage industry by the New York attorney general.

Ameritrade Holding Corp.'s shares were down $14.43 3/4, or 15 percent, to $81.06 1/4 in midday trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Ameritrade and Accutrade had a combined 354,000 accounts as of December, and executed an average of 33,500 trades per day for its customers. Ebert would not provide a breakdown for the two brokerages.
