On the subject of customers having technology to do chips themselves: Labway of Taiwan (a large manufacturer of soundcards, including ESS chips), is saying in a recent AsianSources article that it has licensed a PCI audio chip from an American company to reduce cost. Basically, it seems that an unsuccesful company can sell out their design for a bit of money, allowing a big player to manufacture chips itself at cost, while greatly hurting competitors that supply chips. This seems to be fairly common in Taiwan. I wonder whether VCD/SVCD would be vulnerable in this way?
