LU-CDMA News> Monday February 8, 10:52 am Eastern Time Company Press Release SOURCE: Lucent Technologies Lucent Technologies Enhances its Flexent Wireless Networks Family to Help Carriers Rapidly Expand Service to Meet Explosive Demand NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) today introduced enhancements to its Flexent(TM) Wireless Networks to help network operators better manage rapid subscriber growth, rapidly provision new services, and provide a means to migrate to next-generation technologies required for high-speed wireless data communications. The product enhancements cover both its Time-Division Multiple Access (TDMA) networks and cdmaOne(TM) systems for Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) networks. Both base station products are being shown at Lucent's Booth 3247 of the Wireless '99 exhibition sponsored here this week by the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association. Flexent TDMA Macrocell The new Flexent(TM) TDMA Macrocell is a modular base station that enables TDMA cellular operators to provide both digital and analog service, initially supporting 30 channels per sector. The Flexent(TM) TDMA Macrocell grows with small, 30-channel radio modules which can be installed on walls, instead of on the floor, saving the operator precious real estate for additional cell site equipment. This scalability makes the Macrocell suitable for start-ups as well as new build-outs by established network operators. One of the key benefits of the TDMA Macrocell is its preservation of a network operator's previous investments in Lucent's Autoplex® TDMA as part of the TDMA Flexent product line evolution. Both the Flexent TDMA Macrocell and CDMA Modular Cell feature improved remote maintenance and provisioning by means of enhanced functions available with the Flexent Applications Processor (AP), a network element introduced last year. CDMA Modular Cell Lucent's Flexent CDMA Modular Cell, available for both cellular operators and Personal Communications Services (PCS) providers, is a compact versatile cabinet that is able to support up to nine 1.25 MHz CDMA carriers per sector, or 360 channels. With growth cabinets, the CDMA Modular Cell can support up to 11 PCS carriers. This flexible, high capacity system features a smaller footprint, front access for easy maintenance, and can be deployed indoors or out, stand-alone or as an adjunct to Autoplex cells. The CDMA Modular Cell is Lucent's implementation of an evolutionary base station for third generation wireless networks, (3G). It is backward-compatible with Lucent's cdmaOne networks and can cost-effectively increase voice capacity and data speeds for new applications, including those envisioned under the cdma2000(TM) 3G standard. Network operators will have the option of selectively introducing these advanced services where there is demand from either mobile or fixed wireless customers. With the phased introduction of a technology called cdma2000-1x, the first step in the cdmaOne evolution to cdma2000 services, Lucent will effectively double the capacity of the CDMA Modular Cell. The improvement will be accomplished with a software upgrade and minor hardware replacement.
