YZ:

1849-1949? I thought the Japanese left China in 1945; I'm curious why you date their self rule from the departure of the Chiang gang.
Well, that may be nit-picking. But I'm not sure that the Chinese were more xenophobic than the Russkies; could be they were just smarter, or maybe they just wanted to go on their own tao.
At any rate, it looks as though they made the better choice.

Best regards, Merritt

PS: Any thoughts as to what made the Chinese become so insular? Some feel that archeological finds in Central America indicate there was trade with China...possibly as early as the Han dynasty, so they didn't always have that mentality.

Yiwu,
You do not offend me by the term "imperialist", because after all, that is what "we" are! "We" think that we know what is best for everyone else in the world. It is a bad attitude that will backfire someday, no doubt about it. Yogi
