ATT to spend 10.4 Billions for equip. in 1999, up from 8 billions, this is excluding TCI. Up 30% y/y ( from ALEX BROWN research). They originally projected to spend 8.5 billions, but recently increased the budgets for 1999, increase of 1.9 billions. PRIME BENEFICIARY is LU and will upgrade Teleport and Wireless infrastructure.

Other IXC are increasing but not as much. WCOM to decrease to 6.6 Bill from 7.2 billions. Sprint to increase 12% from 3.1 to 3.5 billions.

RBOCS spending will be slightly up 1% over 1998..totalling 29.6 billions from 29 billions.

Emerging Carriers like LVLT, QWST, WMB to increase 70%. LEVEL three alone will spend 2.4 billion up from 600 million. QWST to spend 1.3 billion, and Williams to spend 1 billion in 1999.

CLECS to spend 2.3 billion up 27%. WINSTAR(LU customer) to spend 600 million up from 325 million a 85% jump. Nextlink to spend 600 million up from 400 million, a 50% jump. Other CLECS ICG and Intermedia to spend 400 millions each, unchanged from 1998. GST 250 million unchanged from 1998.

This gives a fair visibility for LU in US.

Another interesting observation was that previous spending pattern suggest that they might ramp up spending in first half of the year rather than in 4 th quarter as in previous years. This pattern was seen in 1998 as well. That partly explains less than pristine numbers by the vendors in 4 Q 1998.

Whaaa whaaaa... It's amazing how much csco bashing goes on on SI. It's all the woulda coudla shoulda's I guess. Go to the CSCO thread... take a look at how much bashing goes on... Virtually none. Like the company they have their heads down working their asses of to gain market share, understand how to open/create new markets and find new revenue opportunties. It's a company that doesn't stop to whine about what someone else said, or what their competitors are doing..they just go make it happen. Why then do I continue to see sour grapes posts on LU/ASND threads (both of which I'm long on). It's almost like the folks on these threads expect Csco to give 'em a break. Maybe if LU and ASND stay focused on the market (which I'm sure they are) they will succeed. I know for a fact that the exec's at LU/ASND have a complete realistic view of CSCO and the market...unlike the folks on their threads on SI.
