Re the Irving sensor device;

There are a bunch of messages (>1000 !) on rec.photo.digital ovver the past year or so.

50% people asking 'what is this', 1% saying 'what a good idea' and 49% saying 'its been promised for 2 years and is a terrible idea'.

IMHO, its a terrible idea because;
You get the disadvantage of 35mm - cant preview,
the disadvantage of digital - relatively high price for the resolution

along with a unique set of disadvantages;
Likely to suffer from dust
more expensive than other digital, but with lower resolution
cant swap memory when its full (ie you need to buy another whole unit)
more expensive than a whole new digital camera.
The CCD is also meant to be not as good quality as the sensor that most digital cameras use (that is not CCD? Dont know?.)

The only real advantage is that you can use your existing camera with its lenses etc, but thats only if they happen to make a model that fits your specific camera. My 35mm Canon SLR will not take pictures unless film is being taken up in the take-up spool for example, so that is never going to work.

The price they are talking about is aprox $800. Pretty expensive for something that will hold maybe 100 pictures but not let you preview them. Lack of preview is IMHO a serious failing for a digital camera.

And it has been promised for so long, with no appearance at all, that many people have concluded its a hoax. I suspect they either cant get it to work properly, or cant get funding.

Time will tell.
