GlobeSpan Extends Reach Beyond 30,000 Feet for DSL Applications Check It Out February 9, 1999 -- GlobeSpan Semiconductor Inc., one of the world's leading suppliers of digital subscriber line (DSL) chipsets, today announced that it has achieved a reach for DSL telecommunications applications of over 30,000 feet over copper wires. This result was accomplished using improved performance algorithms on GlobeSpan's highly programmable XDSL2 chipset platform. As a result of the longer loop reach, incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC) and data competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) service providers deploying MSDSL equipment utilizing GlobeSpan's chipsets can now offer high speed services to a larger segment of their customer base, increasing their market coverage and customer satisfaction for high speed access. Telecommunications equipment suppliers also benefit from the extended reach performance of GlobeSpan's chipset, enabling them to improve their market share by offering competitive and differentiated products. "With this new example of our commitment to continual product enhancement, GlobeSpan has again raised the DSL performance bar,'' said Angelo Stephano, the Company's vice president of worldwide marketing. "Achieving a 30 kft reach on the XDSL2 platform shows the competitive advantage that GlobeSpan's flexible architecture offers equipment manufacturers and service providers.'' Introduced in May 1998, GlobeSpan's XDSL2 product family integrates a multi-channel digital signal processor (DSP) and framing functions into a single chip. With such high integration, two DSL channels can operate simultaneously and independently, with data rates ranging from 144Kbps to 2.3Mbps, using only a single crystal or oscillator. Additionally, DSL equipment suppliers choosing the XDSL2 platform can automatically take advantage of its software downloadable capability to receive the benefits of GlobeSpan's ongoing performance and feature enhancement releases. Service providers also enjoy increased product life through firmware downloads that upgrade their installed equipment with feature and performance enhancements. With the XDSL2 platform, a single hardware design can target markets around the world that require extended reach, low power and various line codes and data rates. Production quantities of GlobeSpan's extended reach XDSL2 platform supporting up to two channels are available now in various packages. For example, the two-channel G2214-208-002GD MSDSL chipset comes in two 144-pin TQFP packages and is priced at $76 in 100-unit quantities. Other XDSL2-based products are also available today in production volumes. For more information, contact GlobeSpan at 1-888-855-4562 (in the United States) or +1-732-345-7500.
