"Strong bookings, upgrade boost LSI shares"

"LSI Logic Corp. (NYSE: LSI) shot up 2 13/16, or 12 percent, to 26 5/8 Monday after BancBoston Robertson Stephens raised the stock from a "buy" recommendation to "strong buy" and set a 12-month target price of $35 a share.

"Analyst Dan Niles said the chipmaker was "on track" to report earnings above the company's previous guidance, citing strong bookings in early February. In January, the company recorded record bookings as the industry tries to recover from a year-long oversupply of chips.

First Call consensus expects the Milpitas, Calif. company to earn 3 cents a share in the first quarter.

In the first quarter of 1997, it made $30.7 million, or 22 cents a share, on sales of $323 million.

LSI makes integrated circuits for digital video disc (DVD), digital broadcasting, personal entertainment and networking products."
