To the thread: I would like an explanation of what a bucket shop is.

There were many times when Livingston could beat the bucket shops, but not the real exchange in New York, (early days).

Were bucket shops actually trading the underlying securities? or were they just relying on the average Joe's bad market play and just "taking bets".

Also, the parallels are amazing, see today's "Day Trading sites."
