Both TI and Lucent have more powerful DSPs, as I am informed, than ADI.
Since Intel never takes quantum jumps on any advancement, a mundane
fixed point DSP just will do. There is no need for sophisticated
floating point DSPs with all the bell and whistles for now.

I follow the dsp industry very closely. My take is that there are 2 dominant general dsp companies TI the largest by far and ADI. The new high end cores from ADI SHARC Super Harvard Architecture due out this year HammerSharc TigerSharc are IMO the best dsp cores to date more on board memory more I?O to integrate dsp chips ie share memory. TI is a helluva company. There new dsp cores C6 fixed and floating points are very fast powerful and lend themselves best to motor contol. I think TI itself was interested in taking out ADI. There core streenghts are complimentary.I suspect that INTC made a better offer. Re what is in it for ADI I agree it five them increased credability and more important bab capacity. The other dsp companies lu mot and siemens have largely developed dsp for specific applications ie telcom etc. The biggest thing about this announcement is that with INTC deep pockets there ability to bring in the software tooling and algorithm talent to make new dsp cores operable could develop new standards and this with INTC could change the power of balance from TI to ADI if the independent tooling s/w companies op to develop support for INTC dsp cores IMO a given
