Microsoft Is Breaking Itself Up..... Great article which, if you understand the positive side, explains why Microsoft's stock went up so strongly yesterday. Microsoft HAS to break itself up before it can OPEN up. The ALL-Windows strategy is dying a slow death. I am sure this reorganization will breath new life in the old monster. How is Novell impacted? Well, when you have four potential new zones of power within Microsoft, Novell has just opened up 3 new potential companies to sell into: 1) Win 2000, 2) NT 3) Consumer 4) CE (comprise the 4 parts of the monster). Watch Java and Jini rise more powerfully from this move. Internet Wave 2 is all about cross-platform connections and compatibility. The Java/Jini movement delivers the goods. Novell will deliver the platform - NDS - and some great leading edge apps to go along with it - BorderManager, ManageWise, etc. Longer term, I see Microsoft gradually losing out in this race to define the "next standard platform" for server-centric application development. With this reorganization, you can kiss Active Directory goodbye. Gates is setting up an internal war - line up four generals and let them kill each other for the head prize. Balmer and Gates don't know any other way then "kill or be killed". Looks like Achlin is on his way out. Gates is making a "smart" move, but it remains to be seen if he can reorganize the culture to fit the essence of the true internet model of growth: cooperate, share, give, be open, truthful, etc. I seriously doubt Gates can change. All the developers and minds that fit the new Internet model of business have or are in the process of jumping ship to other companies. Microsoft is a dying pirate ship, filled with tons of gold and booty, but with no spirit and leadership to do anything with those spoils. The Pirating Days are over. These guys have to learn to think in new ways, but for them to do this they have to manage a transition off a ship that's about to be blown up and onto four warring ships - being created. One of the first motivations for these new generals will be to take one of the other 3 ships prisoner in a dying consolidated death. Only after this fails will Gates seeks to truely break up Microsoft. He could have 4 new stocks and could become more fabulously weathly than ever. Giving up is the path to growth. For Novell's sake, let's hope he doesn't get it for at least another 2+ years. This is the essence of the bet we are making on Novell. Again, the FLUX POINT is here. Time to CHARGE ERIC!!! Open up, lock and load.....GO!! Here's the link to the full article:zdnet.com >>Internal power struggles, freeware and a brain drain cloud Windows' future. By Mary Jo Foley, Sm@rt Reseller For any company, managing 2,000-plus developers is no picnic. But for Microsoft Corp., where big egos and fat stock options are the norm, it's becoming next to impossible. According to a report first published in The Seattle Times on Sunday, Microsoft is expected to reorganize the company within the next few weeks into four divisions. While the company routinely reorganizes annually, this anticipated move -- which could end up dividing responsibilities for consumer and enterprise operating systems going forward -- could be Microsoft's an attempt to stem some of the inner turmoil. Product shipment delays are a mere crack in the Microsoft "we're-on-track" facade. In recent months, the entire Windows 2000 development process has started to show signs of severe stress fractures. With Windows 2000 still a no-show, Microsoft finally has confirmed that it has abandoned plans to push consumers directly from Windows 98 to the Windows NT kernel.>>
