-- C-Cube Wins MediaOne Deployment; DiviCom and --

C-Cube Semiconductor Break New Ground With the Third Largest Cable
Operator in the U.S.

Business Editors/Technology Writers

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 9, 1999--DiviCom Inc., a
C-Cube (Nasdaq:CUBE) subsidiary and the world's leading provider of
open solutions for digital television, today announced that its open
architecture solution had been selected by MediaOne(R) -- third
largest cable operator in the U.S.A. -- for its first
OpenCable-compliant installation.
When the MediaOne system is fully operational, it will be the
first non-proprietary, open architecture deployment in the U.S. cable
industry.
The C-Cube contributions include several core elements of
MediaOne's OpenCable architecture. DiviCom will supply the complete
head-end system, including the encoding, multiplexing, network
management and return path.
C-Cube Semiconductor will deliver a multiple chip silicon
solution: one portion drives the DiviCom encoder system, and another,
the first of its kind, enables two-way interactive digital video in
the customer's home set-top box. These solutions, combined with the
embedded software and tools, deliver a complete advanced interactive
digital platform.
"MediaOne has made a landmark decision," said Alex Balkanski,
President and CEO of C-Cube Microsystems. "The adoption of a DiviCom
open system solution heralds a new era in which U.S. Cable operators
will no longer be hampered and limited by the closed system,
single-vendor solutions of the past."
MediaOne CEO Jan Peters said, "Our customers will benefit from
our selection of this OpenCable platform. They'll get to choose from a
variety of set-top boxes from different manufacturers, all with better
features and lower prices. This move is a giant step for both MediaOne
and the U.S. cable industry."

Open Architecture is Key

DiviCom's contribution is an open architecture, multi-vendor
solution, which permits the selection of "best of breed" system
components. By integrating technology from multiple vendors, DiviCom
is better able to meet cable operators' requirements, and deliver
innovative new services to end users.
Previously in the U.S. cable industry, head-end installations
were closely controlled by a few vendors that supplied end-to-end
solutions. Once a central system was installed, cable operators were
compelled to stay with that solution in their entire operation --
right down to the customer's set-top equipment.
"Open is better, cheaper and more flexible," said Tom Lookabaugh,
President of DiviCom. "We're the first to support OpenCable, and the
best in the world at putting all the pieces together."
DiviCom digital head-end products are key components of the
MediaOne installation. These products include the MediaView encoding
system, the MediaNode MN20 remultiplexing system, THESYS(TM) graphical
element and network controller, and the InterSect(TM) set-top box
controller. The InterSect controller delivers TCP/IP data over the
MPEG-2 signal to the set-top box.
Interactivity via the set-top box is provided by the C-Cube
AViA@tv(TM) set-top silicon platform. The combined solution is used to
deliver digital broadcast television and pay-per-view, as well as an
exciting set of interactive applications such as web browsing, e-mail,
stock ticker, and electronic program guide.

<<The Company is currently delivering a 50 Gbyte drive (50 billion characters) in a 3.5-inch form factor. >>

Carnac, thanks for the link. When the price low enough, they're in settops.
