any company that goes on-line gets its margins squeezed to death by high web services maintenance/development costs, portal costs (e.g. putting banner links on Yahoo) and on-line competition. PPOD is a flying turd, IMO, as Mr. Pink would put it.

Actually (and this is not an endorsement of PPOD), in L.A., we have a service called Pink-Dot (1-800-PINK-DOT) which is a supermarket that delivers. I have to admit that I have used it when I have been feeling excessively lazy (actually too busy). They deliver in 30 min. or less or the delivery part of the bill ($3) is free. They seem to be doing quite well for themselves as they have a strong force - I always see those little volkswagen bugs with the pink dot logo flying around here. So there is a market for delivering groceries - I have no idea if PPOD is viable though - have not done too much DD on that one.
