Pete,

Sun's JINI will run on any device which supports the Java environment. Its not tied to a given implementation (otherwise bang goes the write-once, run anywhere (hopefully!) promise of Java and JINI).

Such devices will have some sort of operating system (called an RTOS) running on them, and then the Java environment running on top of that, and finally JINI running on top of that. Think of JINI as a Java application. The stuff from Wind River is hence the RTOS (VxWorks) + the Java environment as described by the posting from Prognosticator.

Wind River themselves are Sun licensees of Java. There are many other RTOS vendors (QNX, Psos, Chorus, LynxOS, etc. etc.). Those that license from Sun (very expensive) presumably pass some of this cost on.

Interesting to see the difference in pricing between Sun and Insignia's offerings.

Again, bear in mind whether the intended function of the device is to support ... and let the best Java environment for embedded win the battle!!
