John - whatever is said I think this resignation is related to the ARP bid - my guess is that he was 'for' and a balance of key players were against - otherwise the bid would have been extended - just a guess. but the timing is extraordinary on a day when strong results are released and the ARP bid expires and before the company is due to meet with analists.

Edit - another possibility -he was responsible for the 'low bid' strategy which may be seen now as a failure. dd

The NR says Melnuk left for personal reasons, which probably means a personal disagreement with Mr. Munk over the handling of the bid for ARP. eg. letting the cat out of the bag over the lock up price of $5.50. The stock went almost immediately to that price and ABX was wasting time on a $4.00 bid. It smells like politics to me.
Anyway we'll see what happens. Barrick is probably still in New York trying to negotiate a deal with the 'Funds' unless they have reached the 50.1% which I doubt.
