Mercury Computer Systems Announces SANergy 1.5
CHELMSFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 9, 1999--
Storage Area Network (SAN) Software Extends "The Power to
Share" for the Growing Shared Storage Market
Mercury Computer Systems (NASDAQ:MRCY) today announced SANergy(tm) 1.5, an upgrade for its data sharing software product. SANergy provides true file-based data sharing across a storage area network (SAN), for a wide range of I/O-intensive applications. With this upgrade, SANergy 1.5 adds support for concurrent file sharing with full file-level and byte-range locking on Sun Solaris(tm) platforms to its existing support for SGI IRIX(R), Windows NT(R), and Mac(R)OS operating systems. Furthermore, optimizations within SANergy 1.5 expand the range of applications that can benefit from SAN-based data sharing to include small-file/small-I/O operations, in addition to large-file/large-I/O applications such as streaming digital multimedia.
"Data sharing options for SAN-based storage have historically focused solely on addressing the continuous streaming I/O demands of digital video," said Barry Burke, vice president and general manager of Mercury's Shared Storage Business Unit. "With SANergy 1.5, we have extended our industry leadership with enhancements that accelerate the broader range of applications that tend to access data with more randomness and in smaller chunks. This, coupled with our breakthrough support for the Sun Solaris platform, enables SANergy to be of significant benefit to virtually any I/O-intensive application in the growing shared-SAN market."
Shipping for several months, SANergy is the first standards-based software to combine the simplicity of LAN file sharing with SAN data transfer speeds. With SANergy, there is no hardware lock-in and no proprietary file system, assuring application and operating system compatibility and continued investment protection. SANergy works with virtually any vendor's products in SCSI, SSA, or Fibre-Channel shared storage environments.
"Mercury's new release of SANergy is the clear market leader not only for sharing, but also in making SAN storage user friendly, manageable, and fast," said Michael Peterson, president of Strategic Research Corp. "Users should not underestimate the benefits of storage and data sharing that accrue from a SAN."
SANergy was recently selected by Data Communications magazine as the Storage Area Networking "Hot Product of the Year" in its annual roundup of networking products published in January 1999. In choosing SANergy, Data Communications wrote, "Storage made simple-not to mention less expensive. That winning combo comes courtesy of Mercury Computer Systems, Inc.... SANergy lets multiple servers share multiple storage devices, reading and writing to the same files on the same SAN storage devices simultaneously."
Mercury will demonstrate SANergy 1.5 at the Server I/O '99 Conference in Monterey, California, on February 9, 1999. Demonstrations will spotlight the scalability, throughput and efficiency benefits of SANergy for a variety of applications, including:
--WEB HOSTING: Enabling low-cost scalability without the expense or bottleneck of data replication or centralized file servers, SANergy allows multiple servers to access a single set of source files at true media speeds.
--PREPRESS: Accelerating the large file, multi-system workflow operations required to support digital "direct to plate/proof/film" and enables expensive digital press equipment to be utilized more efficiently
--VIDEO: Simultaneously supporting streaming I/O and computer-generated 3D animation, a mix of Macintosh(R), Windows NT(R), and SGI workstations running popular video applications, SANergy forms the foundation of the "digital studio" of the future - today.
SANergy is available from a growing community of more than 40 OEMs and systems integrators worldwide.
Mercury's Shared Storage Business Unit develops and markets software products that manage the shared access to common storage in heterogeneous environments. SSBU products support high-performance/high-throughput I/O environments such as digital video, digital prepress, and enterprise computing.
Other business units of Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRCY) produce high-performance image and digital signal computer systems that transform sensor data to information for analysis and interpretation on a real-time basis. Mercury's products play a critical role in a wide range of defense and medical diagnostic imaging applications. In air-, sea-, and land-based military platforms, these systems process real-time radar, sonar, and signal intelligence data. Mercury's systems are also used in state-of-the-art medical diagnostic devices, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and the rapidly growing field of digital X-ray.
Based in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, Mercury serves customers in North America, Europe and Asia through a network of subsidiaries and distributors.
