Looks like there may be 2 short term events affecting the prices today.

1. Briefing has a rather negative outlook (what else is new!!) on the Chip Equipment sector using terms like "mania" and failing to acknowledge that the sector is cyclical.

2. Gus Richard left H&Q.

Chip Equipment Analyst Richard Leaves Hambrecht & Quist
Dow Jones Newswires

NEW YORK -- Gus Richard, who was named an All-Star analyst by The Wall Street Journal in 1998 for his research on the semiconductor sector, has left Hambrecht & Quist Inc.

Richard has taken a position as a buy-side analyst for Emerging Growth Management, a San Francisco-based investment firm that manages institutional accounts and two hedge funds. At H&Q, he primarily covered chip equipment stocks such as Novellus Systems Inc. (NVLS) and Applied Materials Inc. (AMAT)

Richard's departure from H&Q follows that of Doug van Dorsten, who covered enterprise computing companies such as Hewlett-Packard Co. (HWP).

A H&Q spokeswoman said the firm hasn't replaced Richard yet, but intends to do so.

In January, the firm hired former PaineWebber Inc. analyst Walter Winnitzki to cover the personal computer industry.

Hambrecht & Quist is a unit of Hambrecht & Quist Group Inc.

Henry,

BUY! APPLIED MATERIALS (AMAT-Nasdaq): @ $67 3/4 Stop: Use a protective stop of $64 7/8.

A recommendation for long-term investors? The stop loss has already been breached.<G>
