Pity poor AMD. Tough to win any rounds when you go up against that gorilla INTC. Jeff << -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Intel Cuts Prices On Celeron Chips -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Story Filed: Tuesday, February 09, 1999 02:59 AM EST LOS ANGELES (Feb. 8) XINHUA - Intel Corp., the world's largest chip maker, Monday cut prices on its Celeron Microprocessors as much as 24 percent. Reports from the Santa Clara, California company said the price of 400 megahertz Celeron chip was cut 16 percent to 133 U.S. dollars from 158 dollars; the price of 366 megahertz Celeron chip was cut 24 percent to 93 dollars from 123 dollars, the price of 333 megahertz Celeron chip was reduced 19 percent to 73 dollars from 90 dollars; and that of 300A megahertz Celeron chip was cut 11 percent to 63 dollars from 71 dollars. Industry sources say the moves by Intel are aiming at winning back market share in the low-end of the PC market. Intel was previously expected to cut prices on its Celeron family for low-cost PCs and other chips on February 28. But Intel has stepped up its price cuts and announced Monday. Intel was a late-comer to the low-end PC market but it has recently come on strong with its latest versions of the Celeron processor designed for PCs costing 1,200 dollars and below, after its first version was not a success. Advanced Micro Devices were able to capitalize on Intel's sluggish start in the low-cost PC sector and gained share in that market. Analysts say the latest moves by Intel will bring more pressure on its rival Advanced Micro Devices, which said last week it would probably report a first-quarter operating loss, due principally to aggressive Intel price cuts. >>
