Yes, it's a lot more than the language, and when I travel abroad it's impossible to completely leave the U.S. I agree that the cultural imperialism is real. I can't really call it good or bad, but I can certainly empathize with anyone who objects to being subjected to it unwillingly. It's probably analogous to living in the fringes of the Roman empire around 300A.D. They probably hated the Romans and the Romans, at least back in Italy, were unaware of it, and likely would have been offended if it were brought to their attention..
