MOREnet Selects Cisco BPX 8600 Switches for Statewide Education Network biz.yahoo.com Cisco Systems announced today that it has been selected to provide advanced Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) equipment to MOREnet, the Missouri Research and Education Network. MOREnet, which provides reliable Internet access and support services to hundreds of thousands of users in Missouri's schools, communities, and state government organizations, has deployed Cisco BPX® 8600 series wide-area switches as its scalable ATM network backbone to deliver carrier-class reliability and ensure high quality of service (QoS) for its Internet access and videoconferencing services. Previously, Missouri had 30 video clusters deployed across the state, which were not connected to the wide-area network. Integrating disparate video clusters over the wide-area network required the ability to specify QoS and still ensure available bandwidth for other Internet and data services. MOREnet also wanted the flexibility to deploy virtual private networks (VPNs) on an as-needed basis as a vital collaboration tool for educators and researchers. ''Cisco's BPX solution makes it easy for us to add capabilities as we build our network,'' said David Olson, Coordinator of New Technologies for MOREnet. ''Reliability is key, and the BPX has unparalleled reliability. We now have a fully redundant, scalable, carrier-class network that we can manage ourselves.'' Cisco's BPX 8600 series wide-area switch is a standards-based ATM device that supports increased bandwidth management and IP+ATM integration. MOREnet has connected the Cisco BPX 8600 switches to Cisco 7200 series routers at each school location with Cisco 12000 series routers at the core. Cisco 7500 series routers currently provide aggregation services for strictly routed traffic. MOREnet also plans to implement Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) in its deployment later this year, combining IP+ATM with guaranteed quality of service over the integrated backbone. MPLS, an emerging industry standard based on Cisco's Tag Switching, is rapidly being accepted as the architecture of choice for delivering advanced IP services in wide-area networks. ''Cisco's BPX switches were designed to combine IP and ATM technologies,'' said Brad Wurtz, vice president and general manager for Cisco's multiservice switching business unit. ''MOREnet is well positioned to benefit from a unified network architecture that enables educators and researchers to share educational resources across the state of Missouri.''
