El Matador: There has been a rumor of a Siemens and Ericsson tie up for many years. Siemens are selling off some divisions, but I hadn't heard they are definately looking for a partner (although most companies are keeping their options open). In the last couple of years they (Siemens) have been working with Alcatel on a couple of projects (e.g., for 3G and in particular, the UTRA wireless indoor standard). Can't see the rationale for Ericsson and Siemens together, as Ericsson has been on the look out for Internet product manufacturers of late (see recent press releases and their Internet products web pages).

From the recent deal with Oz, I am sure we will see a plethora of new products being announced in the coming months. Still see a need for acquiring networking products, but not to the scale as Ascend and Lucent. The attraction for the Cisco's of this world is more in the mind, as the complementary parts of a datacom/networking company and a telecommunication/IP company are not that great (basically the interfaces between an ISP - telco -customer). It of course will allow someone to offer a total solution for a large customer, but hey...where's consumer choice gone? That's my view, but I would be interested in anyone elses.
