We don't need no stinkin' buyout...yet. Medium term prospects for this company are good. It is still in the penalty box for past fouls. If it continues to do well and gets out of the penalty box (getting an upgrade or two from someone that has some influence -- see exchange2000.com for an example of someone who does not) I think there may be significant upside from 9. There is a significantly better release of the 9.x line stewing in beta. The M&S departments are now showing signs of life, especially Marketing.

In the near term I think Microsoft will primarily take the deals that Oracle always wins because "they're the biggest" (I stopped counting the Oracle press releases where Mr. IT at company X makes this statement). Oracle will no longer be the de facto low risk commodity choice. Informix will continue to compete for deals at the high end where SQLServer cannot.

Long term everyone knows Microsoft will over the world. All engineers have a Microsoft-ready resume hidden away somewhere.

I bet (more than I'd like) that if/when a buyout becomes the only viable option for Informix, Mr. Finnochio will have already sold the company. He ain't no fool, he will deliver.

Jeff

Mark Hoffman chose Microsoft SQL Server... that's a sad irony. Thanks Rusty for posting the article.
