Clark- Your statement: The East Timorese, of course, don't want autonomy... they want the independence that was taken away from them 23 years ago when Indonesia seized this ex-Portuguese colony. I don't believe that is quite accurate. East Timor never had its independence. The Port. colony was taken over by Indonesia. I do believe, as you indicate, that this process could get out of control of the central authorities. The South Moluccan (sp?) independence movement is also still very active.
