Although both companies use digital storage based on high-resolution Motion Picture Experts Group-2 technology, which is the same technology that digital videodisc players use, they initially are limiting video output quality to analog signals that offer only slightly better quality than that available with analog VHS recording. Officials at both companies say they are keeping the quality lower to appease content providers that are skittish about giving consumers the means to make high-quality digital recordings of their products.

"There are huge problems with digital copy protection still going on," Plant says. "We convert everything from digital to analog to circumvent piracy right now. Once the problems are fixed, we'll enable the Firewire port in the back." Firewire is an external bus standard that will let consumers connect digital recording devices directly to other home electronics.
