Officials at both companies say they are keeping the quality lower to appease content providers that are skittish about giving consumers the means to make high-quality digital recordings of their products. "There are huge problems with digital copy protection still going on," Plant says. "We convert everything from digital to analog to circumvent piracy right now. Once the problems are fixed, we'll enable the Firewire port in the back." Firewire is an external bus standard that will let consumers connect digital recording devices directly to other home electronics.
