the equipment is fine and will be running well after 2000. however, some dough will have to update the software so that the software doesn't become obsolete. this costs it money. the opportunity cost of this money, to some degree, is more computer hardware.

a concrete example that y2k spending impacts box sales? down revenues for first time in the history of the pc industry at EXACTLY the same time that y2k spending is ramping up.
