Fujitsu and Acer Semiconductor strike a DRAM deal. This might reduce Fujitsu's need for capital spending but I would think expand Acer's need for it. Jeff

FUJITSU: Fujitsu licenses DRAM technology to Acer Semiconductor Manufacturing Inc

Story Filed: Tuesday, February 09, 1999 04:05 PM EST

FEB 9, 1999, M2 Communications - Tokyo -- Fujitsu announced today that it has concluded a DRAM manufacturing technology licensing agreement with Taiwan-based semiconductor manufacturer Acer Semiconductor Manufacturing Inc. (ASMI). Under the agreement, Fujitsu will provide 0.22 - 0.20 micron DRAM technology and consign related DRAM production to ASMI, which in turn will supply DRAMs to Fujitsu at a volume of 10,000 wafers per month. The three-year contract, which runs from 1999 through 2001, will initially involve 64Mbit DRAMs, with 128Mbit and 256Mbit products to follow.

ASMI joins Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Ltd. (TSMC) as the second company to manufacture DRAMs for Fujitsu on a foundry basis. The agreement with ASMI further strengthens Fujitsu's ability to cope flexibly with DRAM market demand, helping to restrain new capital investing while guaranteeing secure access to DRAM production capacity.

At the same time, the licensing agreement is expected to contribute to ASMI's overall technological capability and enable the company to start volume production of 0.22 micron DRAMs in the second half of 1999. Building on the present agreement, Fujitsu and ASMI intend to establish a broad and long-term cooperative relationship.
