There's an article about Microsoft and databases in the 2/22/99 issue of Forbes. MSFT data base sales growth rates are higher than competitors. SQL7 is much cheaper, and is easier to use and configure than the others and thus makes a good choice for the small to medium size businesses that are the growth part of the market. MSFT has $19 billion in cash (compared to $2.1 billion for ORCL) so in an environment where cost and freebies are important, they have the upper hand. SQL7 must be a better product than most people think, because Transamerica corp uses it to track 100 million US properties with no problem. MSFT only has 6% of the market now so has plenty of room to grow..
Big cap tech stocks are always hit hard when institutions start to sell. I think we saw that today for the first time in this decline. New money is going into MM funds rather than stock funds and managers are getting nervous because they have only minimal amounts of cash for possible redemptions. They sell liquid stocks where they have profits. These are also the first ones they buy back.
