(NYSE: AOL) today announced that worldwide membership of its AOL service has exceeded 16 million. The Company said AOL's growth from 15 million to16 million net new members was the fastest addition of one million subscribers in its history. The AOL service exceeded 15 million members worldwide on December 30, 1998. PC shipments rose to more than 27 million units worldwide in the last quarter of 1998, up 15% over the 1997 fourth quarter, according to market research from International Data Corp (IDC). Shipments of PC's climbed by approximately 20% both in the U.S. and Europe during the 1998 fourth quarter compared to 1997's corresponding quarter. In addition, market research firm Dataquest reported that half of all U.S. housholds now have a PC and, indicating how much interest in cyberspace is driving PC sales, 37% of the U.S. market has an Internet connection.
