MediaOne(R) Selects General Instrument to Supply Interactive Digital Systems And Consumer Set Top Terminals for Additional 1999 Launches
MediaOne Digital Launches with GI will be Installed in Systems Serving About 2 Million Subscribers

HORSHAM, Pa., Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC) announced today that MediaOne(R) has selected its digital cable products for 1999 deployment in systems serving approximately two million subscribers.

MediaOne plans to offer digital services in selected markets beyond its initial Detroit deployment beginning in the second quarter, initially employing GI's DCT-2000 interactive digital set-top terminal. GI will work with MediaOne and other technology partners selected by MediaOne to evolve the digital platform toward an open architecture led by MediaOne's specifications.

"GI has the field proven product that allows us to immediately launch digital services in key markets plus the technology base to assist us in achieving MediaOne's open architecture vision," said Judi Allen, senior vice president of Video for MediaOne. "GI can help us open up a new class of services for our customers and provide new revenue opportunities for MediaOne."

"We already have stepped up our efforts with MediaOne to ensure a series of successful digital launches near term and to plan the graceful enhancement of technologies and services over the next year," said Dave Robinson, senior vice president and general manager of Digital Network Systems for General Instrument. "GI is pleased to be working so closely with MediaOne, a true visionary in the new interactive multimedia field."

The DCT-2000 consumer terminal enables a rich suite of broadcast and interactive services to be delivered to consumer homes. Subscribers can receive digital quality pictures, Dolby Digital audio, an interactive on-screen program guide and many more channels. In addition, every DCT-2000 has an integrated real time RF return capability. This enables real time interactive services in the home including video-on-demand, high speed Internet access, e-mail, electronic commerce applications and more.

MediaOne plans to test additional products from GI in its multi-vendor open digital architecture later in 1999 and in 2000. These new systems will enable MediaOne's subscribers to access new suites of real-time interactive services including the ability to simultaneously watch interactive television, surf the World Wide Web and talk on a telephone using Internet Protocols. MediaOne released an announcement on its ambitious plans earlier today.

MediaOne, the nation's leading broadband services company, provides entertainment, information, and communications services to about five million customers.
