Not sure if this was posted already, but the Jan/Feb issue of Technology Review (MIT publication) has a good article on "The FBI's Digital Revolution." References the mammoth problem the FBI has in matching prints sent to it with its data base of prints (CDs with 3,000 prints to a CD and 10,000 disks in all). The hope is to match 635 latent prints a day out of the 60,000 print searches. Bottom line is that too much might be expected out of current technology for it to be a real crime fighter. Major company mentioned is Lockheed Martin which is prime contractor for bringing on line the FBI's Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS), expected July 30.
