Well, the margin requirements changed for many high-flying internet stocks. Assuming they take hits (which they all did), this would certainly trigger some margin calls.
If cash is not available, some sales have to take place, and not necessarily in the internet sector. These sales may depress other prices, triggering other margin calls, creating a cascade effect throughout the market.
I've seen that happen before, and I wouldn't be surprised if there is something to it.

Thread,
Imagine some strange Voodoo guy with streaming tickers going across a pager and a cell phone to one ear while in free fall on some wacky Disney thrill ride. Yep, that would be Dougr. Now, I don't know if he was actually on a ride when he made his Monday trades, but he was making trades from Magic Kingdom. So much for vacations. At least he's not watching every tick.
I ran into him this AM in the lobby and he wanted me to let y'all know he had sold FAXX and bought some more WARPF and JBM on Monday. Actually when I ran into him he was on the phone with his broker causing a wee up tick in HNV about 9:45 this morning. He had sold HNV last Thurs @ 3) but it had gotten just too low for him not to get back in. That's all for now.
From Orlando,
Alski

NSOL -- EDIT

Hope none of you critters became road-kill yesterday.
Keep an eye on this plotz. It got hammered a little more than the others yesterday, perhaps on earnings jitters, but the numbers seem OK to me. It's one of the few stocks I've seen so far poised to open higher.

Nope, change that. Now it's dropping in early trading. ENMD's going to get HAMMERED today. At risk of prematurity, let me say: Welcome sir.
