Hi Edward:

A stock does NOT HAVE to be above $5 to be either shortable or marginable. Many banks and brokerage firms do not regularly lend out shares of stocks below $5; this is their prerogative. Should you find a good brokerage firm with a hard working stock loan department, they will find you shares in many stocks that most firms immediately decline you on.
